The newly redesigned Procaster from Daiwa has set the standard for moderately priced reels. The Daiwa Procaster Casting Reel is packed with features that make it the best bang for the buck. Built on a solid one-piece aluminum frame, add an incredible six ball bearings and one anti-reverse roller bearing, and include Daiwa’s exclusive Free Floating Spool and you are holding a package that can cast any lure a long way. Daiwa also included the MagForce adjustable magnetic antibacklash control so you can fine-tune the Procaster to provide effortless, backlash free casts, all day long. Machine-cut brass gears provide smooth cranking power and the 6.3:1 gear ratio will burn a lipless crankbait while providing power to move big fish.

Abu Garcia Revo STX applies a Linear Magnetic Brake™ system that uses five magnets to induce resistance on the spool depending on the setting. The cast control, adjusted externally, can be set from zero to max. On the dial you’ll notice there’s only an indication of Max. This didn’t bother me at all though understandably, some anglers would prefer visual marks for their settings. We dissected the Revo and after removing the sideplate holding the Linear Magnetic Brake™ system we found the adjustable metal plate that’s used to shield the magnets. At the minimum setting the magnetic cast control system cannot be turned off completely even when the shield is over the magnets, but we found it really had little affect on the spool. On our field tests, we dialed the cast control to the minimal setting and it was already freespooling faster than what most anglers want. Be forewarned that at this setting, anglers who don’t feather the spool might get themselves into some nasty birdnests. We’re happy to report, that on the other side of the reel, the spool tension knob comes with a very refined micro-click adjustment.

Zero degree of handle backplay. Thanks to the reel’s tight tolerances and handle design, the Revo STX has a very solid feel in this department: a feel that is extra reassuring when setting hook on a fish. The 10 stainless steel ball bearings deliver an actual retrieve that is both smooth and consistent. The oversized Duragear™ delivered surprising power

New Shimano Chronarch D Reel Review

Shimano prepares to introduce the much anticipated redesign of the Chronarch series, the new D version is a major departure from the previous generation reel and places greater emphasis on weight reduction and improved ergonomics without sacrificing power or refinement. We previewed the new Chronarch D and had the opportunity to conduct some preliminary field tests on the new version.The first thing anglers will notice about the Chronarch D is that it looks a whole lot like the Core, it is actually dimensionally identical and can be considered an aluminum version of the Core. The paint finish on the reel is a combination of silver and white and recalls some of the colors in the older Chronarch reels.

The minute we picked up the reel and held it hand side by side with the Chronarch B the difference in weight was instantly perceptible. The new Chronarch D shaves a whopping 1.4oz. off the Chronarch B which puts it below the weight of the original “A” version by .3oz and below the Gold “SF” reel by .8oz.

Both the frame and both sideplates on the Chronarch D are all aluminum and the reel makes use of an ultra lightweight A7075 aluminum magnumlite spool. Shimano went to town when it came to loading the Chronarch D with features and preserved the powerful HEG (High Efficiency Gearing) with a durable brass drivetrain. While the bearing count has not changed (6+1) they have been upgraded to S-A-RB ball bearings.

Cabela’s purchasing specialists had an idea for design and function, so they sat down with the engineers at Daiwa to create the new Tournament ZX by Daiwa spinning reel. It has an eight-ball-bearing system that includes bearings at key locations for an even higher level of reliability. The DigiGear™ digital gear design is super-smooth, super-powerful and up to the challenge of the biggest freshwater and even some saltwater game fish. The HardBodyz™ computer die-cast aluminum alloy frame keeps the internal components lined up, even when the reel is under stress. Machined-aluminum ABS spool and handle resists wear. The handle is also outfitted with an ultralightweight, cork-filled Soft Touch knob. Infinite anti-reverse helps set the hook immediately. Twist Buster II™ line twist reduction keeps line laying flat for easier casting and retrieval. Gyro™ balanced to eliminate wobble. Spare spool included.

Excellent Spinning Reels, September 17, 2009
By Anonymous from Sheboygan, WI

“I needed to replace some aging reels in the boat and purchased 4 – 2000A’s late summer of 2008. I added 2 – 2500A’s and 2 – 3000A’s in 2009. These are super reels with great features, along with fit and finish. I mainly chase walleyes on lake Winnebago and have enjoyed them for jigging as well as casting. I was so pleased with their performance that I added the larger 3000′s for when I head down to the piers on Lake Michigan and cast for salmon and trout. No disappointment here. 4 – 15lb plus king salmon this year already. These fish are like hooking a rocket ship, ripping 100′s of yards of line off your reel in seconds, multiple times. The drag performed flawlessly. These are great reels to consider and are a great value, especially when they are on sale.”

“Smooth operation all around. Spool capacity was important in my selection of this reel , 260 yds of 12# test. Fantastic price. This reel comparable to model made by Diawwa.”

Cabela’s Tournament ZX Spinning reels, July 26, 2009
By flatback from Terra Ceia Island, Florida

“I probably have about a dozen of these reels now, and they are excellent. Drags are smooth, and the reels are very durable, and silky smooth to reel. I fish only artificial baits, making perhaps 500 to 1000 casts a day, which puts a lot of wear and tear on reels, but these hold up extrememly well. Only one observation…the bail springs seem to be a bit weak, but I have not had a failure because of it.”

“I purchased this reel from the bargain cave on sale this summer. It has performed flawlessly all summer. It is tournament grade all the way. When it goes on sale again, I will buy another one.”

A comprehensive look at each of the new and improved features of the Shimano Stella Spinning Fishing Reel. Demonstration includes diagrams and slow motion close-up views of each component. Includes real casting demonstrations.

If you’ve ever used a Shimano reel before, you probably know they’re some of the best on the market. I’ve always been a Shimano fan, but recently I had the opportunity to test one of the greatest Shimano spinning reels ever made, the Stella Spinning Reel.

This reel is nothing short of perfect. With its thin-profile aluminum body, side plate and rotor, the Stella is built to endure about anything a fisherman can give it. And with as many as 14 ball bearings supporting its moving parts, a fisherman will be able to use this smooth-action reel all day long. To help aid in easy-retrieving the Stella also features Shimano’s patented DynaBalance system. With a specially designed rotor, the DynaBalance system lessens the wobble of the reel when you reel in, so every motion you put into the reel is used as efficiently as possible.

The first thing I do when I get a new reel out of its box, is spin the handle and see how long the reel will keep going. With the Stella’s frictionless spinning action, the spool shaft actually “floats” on stainless steel ball bearings with no actual contact. So you can probably guess the reel kept spinning long after I was tired of watching it. The second thing I do when I get a new reel is to see how much back play is in the handle when I try to turn it backwards. And I’m not kidding, there was absolutely no back play; not even a smidgeon of movement. With its special Super Stopper II feature, the Stella uses a one-way roller bearing to keep the handle going only in the right direction — unless you want to switch it to go both directions. The anti-reverse feature is priceless. When you feel a nibble and decide to set the hook, it’ll be instant.

The Stella also comes with a waterproof drag casing that keeps muck out of the gears. This is a fantastic design element on Shimano’s part, as debris in your gears is good way to kill a reel. As as with most Shimano Spinning Reels, the Stella also comes with their Power Roller feature; a special line roller that reduces line twist.

The Stella Spinning Reel is a serious machine built for the serious angler. Every piece of the reel is perfectly machined and is as durable as they get. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to test one out and if you have the means, I would highly recommend getting your hands on one.

You can be sure when a company like Daiwa Japan introduces a new reel, there will be an endless amount of anticipation surrounding this reel’s debut. Add to this, news that the new reel will be replacing the company’s most respected, and widely popular flagship reel, the TD-Z 103M and look out: every picture, tidbit of information, etc. will be scrutinized until the very moment the reel is available for purchase. What happens when this much anticipated moment arrives? You can be certain TackleTour will be right in the middle of the fray to help you make heads and tails of it all. Introducing our review of the much anticipated Daiwa Japan TD-Z replacement, the Daiwa Steez Baitcaster.

Definitely the first thing that strikes you with this reel is its weight or lack thereof. Our Steez weighed in at a mere 5.5 ounces out of the box. That makes it lighter than the Pixy! The second thing that struck us was Daiwa’s unabashed stamping of the reel’s name in every spot imagineable around the frame, handle, and sideplates. You’d have thought they were selling ad space on their reels to help pay for the retooling they underwent in order to bring this reel to market. Looking past all that, perhaps the most astonishing surprise was, once we opened up the sideplate, our discovery that the reel’s spool had an all too familiar looking rotor. It is the same rotor as that of our 2004 Limited Edition Type R+ and Custom TD-Z’s! Daiwa has apparently, finally made use of the R&D efforts that materialized in their limited edition reels to bring to market, a full production reel with many of these same features.

      Pros

    * Durable
* Good Value
* High Quality

      Cons

    * None

“This reel is a dream come true. I own several other baitcasters and this one outcasts and has smoother operation than them all. I have an older PTXM that is nice also but this one does a little better to outcast it with less backlash. Cranking is precise and smooth. Bought mine in 2007 and put it on a 6.5″ St. Croix Legend. You won’t be sorry.”

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Bassmaster Elite Series Pro, Tim Horton, talks about the new Patriarch baitcast reel and how you can get an edge using this reel with flurocarbon line.

Patriarch Baitcast Reels

    * 10 double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings

    * One-way clutch instant anti-reverse bearing

    * Titanium line guide

    * Ultimate Brake SystemTM combines centrifugal and magnetic brakes for a limitless range of cast control

    * Machined, ported and double anodized aluminum spool

    * Main gear applied star drag system with carbon fiber washers

    * Lightweight aluminum frame with aluminum handle side plate and palm side

    * Smooth multi-disc main gear applied drag system with audible star adjustment

    * Dual soft touch knobs

    * Titanium coated for a durable finish

    * Neoprene reel bag

The Patriarch features an aluminum frame and side plates along with titanium coating for corrosion protection. The reel has a machined drag star and handle with gold highlights – a detail reflected on the machined, ported aluminum spool. This shallow but wide spool holds 130 yards of 14 pound test line.

The Patriarch comes in both a 6.4:1 and a 7.1:1 gear ratio each of which house 10 double shielded stainless steel ball bearings plus one roller bearing. Like the Supreme, the Patriarch also features the Ultimate Brake System which is a combination of centrifugal plus magnetic cast control. A nice addition to this premium reel is a thick neoprene reel cover to protect the reel during transportation or when not in use.
